New Assistant Director Named!

The Hawk Band is proud to introduce the newest assistant director, Mr. Edward Lopez. Mr. Lopez graduated from the University of Texas this spring. He is a graduate of Edinburg North High School. At UT he was president of Kappa Kappa Psi in the Longhorn Band. He was a clarinet player in the UT Wind Ensemble during his tenure at the school (one of only a handful of undergraduates in this world renowned ensemble). He was a member of the Texas Cowboys, the University of Texas Cactus Yearbook, and continued to teach lessons while maintaining his Dean's List status. Mr. Lopez was selected as a UT outstanding student finalist and outstanding "new man" in the Longhorn Band. He also worked to establish a $30,000 endowed scholarship in the Longhorn Band. In addition, Mr. Lopez has worked as a representative for Texas Music Festivals, UIL, USSBA, YEA and BOA at contests in the state of Texas. Mr. Lopez will begin immediately, and the staff is excited to welcome this talented new member to our band family at Hendrickson High School.

Staying Healthy
Many people do not think of band activities as demanding. On the contrary, marching band can be quite a rigorous endeavor. Please remember , it is important that all students involved in strenuous activities try to follow certain proceedures to be able to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Below are suggestions that all band members should try to follow to make sure the are able to stay healthy not only during the hot days of band camp, but also during the entire school year:
• Sleep. Be Rested.
• Proper Diet. Avoid fried and processed foods, and carbonated drinks.
• Hydration. Lots of water or sport drinks – more that you think you need.
• Multivitamin – taken with your breakfast which includes at least 3 of 4 food groups.
• Wash Your Hands frequently and avoid rubbing your eyes or mouth with your hands.
• Stretch and Exercise, especially on our “off” days.
• Stay Positive. Mental health is key to your physical health (and vice versa).

In addition to the above, Mr. Gundersen has stated that he would like to try to get all of our band members to be able to have a heart screening. This is important in order that any young person who might be at risk for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (sudden cardiac arrest) be identified before serious health problems might occur. The Championship Hearts Foundation, in conjunction with the Heart Hospital of Austin, offers a program (periodically for free, but usually for a minimal $15 fee) for young people ages 15-18 who are involved in strenuous activities the ability to have a screening for this condition. For more information regarding this program please click here.
